LEGENDS OF BOTTLENECK BLUES GUITAR. DVD

Featuring: Son House, Johnny Shines, Fred McDowell, Jesse Fuller, Furry Lewis & Mance Lipscomb
"This excellent video focuses primarily on Mississippi Delta bottleneck blues guitarists, and within that framework illustrates several different playing styles... The highlights of the video are the two numbers by Son House. 'Levee Camp Moan' is preceded by a short but hilarious lecture from House about the dangerous business of love. Both this clip and his 'Death Letter Blues' typify a Son House live performance -- he begins each song with a soft-spoken introduction, then takes a deep breath, hunches over the guitar, and explodes into sound and fury. At the end of each song he seems to collapse with exhaustion. For many of today's younger blues fans, these videos offer the only chance to see these great artists perform the songs they're best remembered for. Highly recommended."
Living Blues, Legends Of Bottleneck Blues Guitar presents rare and historical recordings from 1965-1970 of some of the greatest exponents of this blues technique. Black bottleneck guitar styles were probably initially inspired by lap-style Hawaiian slide guitar which enjoyed immense popularity shortly after its inception in the mid-1890s. By 1903, it was already in vogue in Mississippi (and probably elsewhere) according to testimony from W. C. Handy, Gus Cannon and others. Although particularly popular in Mississippi and Louisiana, bottleneck styles could be found the length and breadth of the rural South.
While there were similarities amongst guitarists in some locales, there was no preponderant style or approach other than the ability and imagination of the guitarist employing a slide technique. The musicians presented in this video are amongst the greatest exponents of slide blues guitar who ever lived and are ample testimony to the superb variety available in this style.

LEGENDS OF COUNTRY BLUES GUITAR, 1. DVD

As a genre, blues music was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century by rural black musicians. The music they played was alien to formula, possessing such skill and robustness as to be captivating, but few were widely known. The blues revival of the early 1960's brought many of the survivors to the forefront of traditional music. The technique of a Rev. Davis, the power of a Son House, the charm of a Mississippi John Hurt suddenly leaps into sight, becoming more tangible, more awesome and more human. The rare footage presented in this DVD is a treasure beyond imagining, drawn from a myriad of sources, depicting some of the greatest blues musicians who ever lived: Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Peter Williams, Josh White, and Brownie McGhee. 88 minutes. A free booklet of biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes may be downloaded from guitarvideos.com to accompany this video. 88 MINUTES.

LEGENDS OF COUNTRY BLUES GUITAR, 2.

Documenti filmati, un'ora con: Bukka White: Aberdeen Mississippi blues -poor boy. Sam Chatmon: big road blues -that's all right -Sam's rag. Big Joe Williams: sloppy drunk blues -highway 49 -Providence help the poor people. Houston Stackhouse: cool drink of water. Son House: yonder comes the blues. Rev. Gary Davis: buck dance -hard walking blues -make believe stunt -keep your lamp trimmed and burning. Leadbelly: goodnight Irene 1 -the grey goose -pick a bale of cotton -goodnight Irene 2 -take this hammer. DVD
running time: 58 minutes.

The blues "rediscovery" era of the 1960s brought to concert and sound stages many veteran artists who had participated in the "Golden Age" of country blues recording prior to World War II. The best of them retained much of their youthful power and brought with them the authority of experience. While these artists have since passed on, their record legacy is enhanced by these extraordinary performance clips. 60 MINUTES.

The first generation of recorded Delta bluesmen--Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Mississippi Sheiks--is echoed in the stark and powerful performances of Bukka White, Sam Chatmon, Big Joe Williams, Houston Stackhouse and Son House. The East Coast ragtime style is exemplified by its supreme exponent, Reverend Gary Davis, seen here in some recently discovered informal footage. Huddie Ledbetter was a tradition unto himself with his repertoire of work and "play party" songs reflecting pre-blues African-American music idioms. The extraordinary color footage of LeadBelly singing three songs, and the informal footage of him singing Goodnight Irene to his wife Martha, are a treasure for fans of this American folk giant. Collectively the performers presented here are an extraordinary group, keepers of bygone traditions whose legacies still resonate.

Much of the extremely rare performance footage presented in this video has never before been publicly seen and documents the diversity of a music which was a personal as a fingerprint yet as universal as the blues itself. John Jackson, Pink Anderson, Rev. Gary Davis and the charismatic Josh White manifest different aspects of the rich Piedmont ragtime/blues tradition. In Memphis, echoes of the Mississippi Delta could be heard in the music of Furry Lewis, while the delightfully eccentric Jesse Fuller and the introspective Robert Pete Williams embody country blues which defies regional identity. LEGENDS OF JAZZ GUITAR, 1. 15 titoli di: Joe Pass, Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Herb e Barney. DVD

Product Description:
Since first meeting in the 1920's, neither jazz nor the guitar have ever been the same. This swinging celebration of the union presents four legends of jazz guitar: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis. "Of all the ways to improvise," say Kessel, "the most stimulating and demanding is jazz". The four artists here demonstrate stunning command of the fingerboard alongside inspired explorations of standards, blues and ballads. Explosive cascades of notes as well as languid pools of music pour from these maestro's imaginations and fingers. "The object for me," said Joe Pass, "is to play music, to communicate, not to show hard things or fast things." While guitarists will note plenty that's hard and fast in this video/DVD, somehow these masters make even the impossible appear effortless. "That's class." Virtuosity tempered by taste and informed by imagination is a constant force in this collection of brilliant jazz guitar performances. It's just the idea of making it musical". The high-wire act of balancing virtuosity and musicality meets it match in the remarkable artists seen in the second volume of Legends of Jazz Guitar, featuring Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, and Grant Green. LEGENDS OF JAZZ GUITAR, 3. DVD

Product Description:
The guitar's odyssey in jazz is presented afresh in Vestapol's third compilation of prime performances from six of the idiom's movers and shakers. These men are among the most exemplary band members to choose the guitar as their means of expression. The initial inspiration for most of them was Charlie Christian, who blazed trails jazz guitarists still tread a half century later. Christian swung in the direction of bop, and his disciples (foremost among whom are seen here) boldly carried the guitar into that next phase of jazz. Aside from their fervor for the potential of the guitar in the evolution of jazz, many of these artists have similar backgrounds: Southern or Southwestern, and of roughly the same generation. But their individuality is abundantly clear in performances ranging from meditative ballads to speed-of-sound boppers. Underlying it all is an exhilarating sense of triumph over that apparent oxymoron, jazz guitar. Having proven that the guitar is indeed a first rate medium for jazz expression, these artists confidently address other contradictions, ones involving evolution within a well-grounded tradition. They're serious about their business, but you can see them having fun with it, too. 63 minute video.
