La strada
Ricordo la prima volta che ho ascoltato il famoso pattern di doppia cassache LarsUlrich suona in "One': dei Metallica. Mi trovavo in casa del mio migliore amico, profondamente coinvolto a quei tempi dalla musica di Van Halen, Led Zeppelin e Rush,ma nel momento che mi sentii investito da quei colpi di cassa, provai un livello nuovo di stato paradisiaco e scoprii un modo totalmente nuovo di suonare la batteria. Grazie al sostegno incredibile dei miei genitori, fui abbastanza fortunato nel riuscire ad accaparrarmi uno dei migliori insegnanti di batteria in città. Quelle lezioni fornirono un'importante e organizzato metodo di apprendimento dello strumento, mentre io pendevo letteralmente dalle labbra del mio maestro, imparando tutto ciò che potevo nei molti anni di lezioni che seguirono. Ma l'esperienza, non appresa dai libri e forse reale, avveniva quando tornavo a casa e, messo da parte quei libri, afferravo le cuffie per suonare insieme ai miei eroi del metal drumming.
Non ci volle molto a me ed ai miei amici più cari che vivevano nei dintorni, anche loro impegnati nello studio della batteria, a mettere insieme un "monster drumset" che cominciò ad avvicinarsi all'arsenale sonoro di cui avevamo bisogno per imitare i batteristi che all'epoca ascoltavamo. Avremmo colto ogni occasione per metterci alla batteria e suonare sulle tracce di quelle divinità del drumming. Questo andò avanti per anni.
Un disco alla volta, e spesso completamente per fortuna, sono arrivato a conoscere gruppo dopo gruppo, ognuno con un batterista fonte di incredibile ispirazione, che intrecciava nuovi edificanti grooves e assolo, tenendomi inchiodato allo strumento al fine di poter almeno imitare alla mia maniera le parti più interessanti. Mi ricordo, ogni volta che facevo queste scoperte musicali, che pensavo a quanto fossi fortunato ad imbattermi in drumming così eccitanti. E questo mi faceva pensare a quanto altro mi stavo perdendo là fuori.
Questo libro cerca di strutturare ed accelerare il processo di scoperta ed apprendimento dalle leggende del metal drumming, fornendo una strada maestra nel percorso o,sevogliamo, nello stile metal, contrassegnato da fondamentali pietre miliari, ovvero i batteristi, lungo la sua storia. Spero possa accelerare il processo di esplorazione cosicché sia possibile dedicare più tempo all'ascolto e all'apprendimento e, quindi, meno tempo chiedendosi dove trovare nuovi indizi e guide nel genere meta!
Due dei più grandi doni nella nostra comunità di batteristi sono la fonte sempre in crescita di musicisti ispirati che immettono innovazioni nel nostro lavoro e la continua ricerca tra le leggende che hanno formato la nostra storia collettiva nella batteria. Non è possibile nello spazio di un solo libro trattare ogni musicista che ha dato un importante contributo al metal drumming, perciò, se vedete mancare all'appello qualcuno dei vostri batteristi favoriti, sappiate che lo stesso vale per me e che ho in progetto di trattarli in pubblicazioni successive.Ma ciò che troverete nelle seguenti pagine è una vitale esplorazione di una dozzina di batteristi leggendari, analizzati in dettaglio, completa con lezioni che vi insegneranno come suonare i loro grooves e assolo più caratteristici. Perciò, pronti a girare la pagina e a cominciare il vostro viaggio sulla strada battuta!
Un'ultima cosa: apprestandovi a leggere questo libro, sappiate che è impossibile emulare perfettamente un altro batterista. I batteristi in questo libro sono stati scelti perché ognuno di loro è un artista leggendario con un dono unico. Il loro modo di suonare é in costante evoluzione, alimentato da quanto hanno sofferto, da ciò che hanno visto e sentito e dalle esperienze che hanno vissuto. Più che imparare un po' di trucchi di un batterista, cercate realmente di assorbire il quadro più grande di quello che sta accadendo. Ascoltate i ritmi nel loro contesto originale. Uscite e comprate le canzoni, se ancora non le avete, e sentite come questi maestri suonano, mentre ascoltate cosa stanno suonando. Interiorizzando le loro "cose': le unirete al vostro unico bagaglio e lo userete per sviluppare il vostro stile individuale. Quando suonate, poi, siate sinceri e fate promessa di connettervi con tutto ciò che avete imparato dai maestri della batteria, di filtrarlo attraverso la vostra esperienza personale e di suonare con una voce che è unicamente vostra.
