Martin Taylor, from Ayrshire, Scotland, has been playing guitar for as long as he can remember. From a young age, he was playingjazz, even playing onboard the Queen Elizabeth II. In 1979, Martin started a 10 year gig with the great jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. Martin met David Grisman in 1980, and has collaborated with him on several projects since then. This project, TONE POEMS II, is arguably the best of their works together. Martin is one ofthe finest jazz and fingerstyle guitarists in the world, and these two artists have an uncanny ability to playoff of each other's talents. Martin's guitar is there to provide ever interesting support behind melody, or to burst forth in a chorus. As you can hear, Martin is equally at home with a hot jazz improv or with a fingerstylejazz arrangement. The tunes are listed in order of difficulty, whether with plectrum, or fingers. Much ofhis playing is arranged on the spot, that is "improvised". Thus, in many spots, these transcriptions provide you with at least one way to play what you hear. You may come up with an alternative way to play the same notes that is easier for you. To learn more about Martin Taylor and David Grisman, go to the internet, and check out martintaylor.com and dawgnet.com. Now grab your guitar and have a great time with these wonderful arrangements.

In the notation and the tablature, the curved lines connecting some notes or numbers, can mean several things. If the notes are the same, the curve is a tie. If the notes get higher in pitch, the curve is a hammer-on, meaning that the first fretted note is produced by the pick, and the second note is produced by a left hand finger hammering down on the string, producing the next sounded note. If the notes get lower in pitch, the curve indicates a pull-off. This means that the first note is struck with the pick, and the second note is produced by pulling away with the left hand fretting finger. A curved line combined with a straight line connecting two notes means that the first note is struck and the left hand finger slides up or down to the next note, without striking the string again. A straight line in front of or after a note, means that you "slide" to or away from the indicated note.
Diamond head notes in the notation, and numbers with brackets around them in the tablature, indicate harmonics. This is a bell like tone produced by lightly touching the string with the left hand over the indicated fret, and striking it with the pick.

Mood Indigo
This tune will get you going with a tasteful unadomed melody. Play along!

Mairzy Doats
I have taken Martin's rolling chords behind David, and used them to accompany his own melody. The melody line becomes more "interesting."

It Had To Be You
The guitar starts the intro, and then Martin plays an interesting accompaniment behind the mandolin. Then at measure 37, there is a key change and Martin starts his solo. Mandolin melody then comes back in, and Martin weaves in a few "answer" licks, leading up to the ending lick. Again, this is very playable.

Teasin' the Frets
Guitar one at the top of the staff, is doing the melody work, and Guitar two provides the rhythm, and there are occasional bursts of unison comping.

Jeepers Creepers
Martin kicks this offwith a fingerstyle intro. Then he goes into a nice basic chordal accompaniment. Then Martin plays the first ofthe fine fingerstyle arrangements on the CD. In measure 36 the arrows in the tablature indicate right hand thumb movement on the 6th string. Arrow down means thumb is moving towards the low 6th string, and arrow up means movement towards the high 1st string.

Tears
I took some liberty with this tune. On the CD I believe David played the tune on a tenor guitar. Since the tenor guitar is in short supply these days, and the arrangement was wonderful, I moved it around a little bit on the neck of a standard guitar, and made it work, with as little change as possible to the harmony and spirit ofDavid's arrangement. I think it worked out well, if I do say so myself! There are a few allowances to be made in fingerings, but it is true to the original idea on the tenor guitar.

Please
The hardest part ofthe first page is staying out of the way ofthe harmonics on the first string in measures 4 and 12. If you know ofa better way, please let me know! At measure 21 the mandolin solo starts. At measure 37 the guitar melody starts again. At measure 53 the mandolin takes the lead again. At measure 60 there is a wonderful key change and the guitar accompanies till the end, with some luscious chord changes.

Anything Goes
In this piece, Martin is vamping behind his own lead guitar work. He starts off with chordal riffs on CMaj7, Eb9, and G13, and then the melody comes in at measure 8. He is Subdued until measure 39 when the improv kicks in, and he doesn't stop the rest of the piece. This tune is the first real glimpse into Martin's fluid lines.

My Romance
This piece is a hauntingly beautiful arrangement of a vocal standard. Martin's playing is like breathing and singing. I have allowed for extra beats in measures to accomodate the phrasing. There are places where concessions were made so that free flowing lines could be somehow notated. Once you learn the notes you can go back and match your playing to the phrasing on the CD. The stretches in the left hand in measures 60 and 61 will take practice.

Blue Moon
For most ofthis song, the guitar is supporting the mandolin melody. The guitar never tops rolling along, and Martin comes up with little variations to keep it from getting old, and he takes a solo on the bridge.

Out of Nowhere
Martin provides fingerstyle accompaniment for this piece, and then starts a solo at measure 36. In 37, he sweeps his thumb up toward the 6th string, and again in 39. In measure 68 and 69, the thumb gets a little more involved, with a trademark Martin Taylor lick. The right hand thumb sweeps up along the bottom three strings as the left hand is getting ready to move downwards (towards the nut). The entire motion is very quick and the individual notes are barely heard. It is just a blur.

Musette for a Magpie
This piece, composed by Martin, is fast and furious. The theme is stated clearly, and then at measure 68, he starts an improv variation. At measure 143, there is a bend, which raises the note a 1/2 step.

Crystal Silence
This piece, more than any other, spotlights the intense interaction between the two players. While David is stating the melody with rich tremolos and legato slides, Martin is rolling some fantastic chords behind the mandolin. The amazing part is the rhythmic interplay between them. When David finishes a musical sentence, Martin knows when to slow his roll, and again, he is playing as if he were singing. There is no good way to notate this interplay, so once more I took concessions with the notation in order to get the notes written down, measure for measure with the mandolin. Once you get the rolls under your fingers, you can go back and play along with the CD to get it "right."

Besame Mucho
We are into difficult stuff here with rhythmic nuances, and lightening fast scale passages, and tricky timing between measures. In his improvisation Martin pulls off some incredible runs. Again, very difficult to put down on paper, but sufficient to show you where he is going with the speedy notes. At measure 34 there is nice harmony with the mandolin.

Over the Rainbow
There is a lot going on in this arrangement. Martin is playing the basic rolling chordal accompaniment, and then he has a melodic lead going at times, and the mandolin is weaving in and out with melody. At measure 27 and 28, you have to play the notes on the 1st and 3rd strings almost as a tremolo, while damping the second string with your left hand, so that it is not heard in the trill. There are places such as measure 53 where the rhythms of the three instruments has to recalibrate, andjump back in. Hard to explain, but you can hear it, ifyou listen for it. Beautiful ending as all three instruments dreamily end the theme.

Lulu's Back in Town
This is the grand finale of the CD in terms of difficulty. The problem is speed! There is a lot going on with left hand horizontal slides, and right hand fingering. There is more right hand thumb action in this piece than any other. Watch the arrows in the tablature, that indicate thumb movement up or down. For instance. in measure 27, the bracket underneath the tablature indicates that the right thumb moves toward the 6th string, and hits the 5th and 6th strings in that sweeping motion. Then it turns around and goes back toward the first string, striking the 6th string again. And these thumb motions are very fast. In the ending, measure 128, the first note is a "pre-bend" in which the string is bent up, and then struck and released. The piece ends with a clever chord incorporating a harmonic at the 12 fret into the chord.

LULU'S BACK IN TOWN

I am a guitar / mandolin player who has followed the playing of Martin Taylor for ten years, starting when he was touring with Grappelli. As president of the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society I am partial to good fingerstyle arrangements anyway! Martin has been gracious in his love and support for Chet's style of music. I would like to thank my wife Carol and daughter Katelynn for their support throughout this project.
I couldn't have done it without their help.
