JOHN LEE HOOKE SIGNATURE

INTRODUCTION
Just as post-World War II America was starting to recover and roll peacefully forward, a new electric blues sound came out of Detroit clanging harder than the cars being stamped out of Motor City's assembly lines. John Lee Hooker's stark, steelyard blues bore a primal, grinding intensity that reflected the harsh realities and uncertainties of contemporary urban life, even as the music's context and modal forms drifted back to the Delta haze of Depression-era Mississippi. His raw, over-amped guitar tone, similar to that of Muddy Waters, who was pumping out his own raucous electric blues a couple hundred miles to the southwest in Chicago, contributed largely to what would become the blues primary instrumental voice. More than anything, however, Hooker's earliest recordings possessed a physical presence and sensuousness as gripping and pure as the drip paintings Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock was creating at the same time in New York.
John Lee Hooker was born to Minnie Ramsey and William Hooker on August 22, 1917, about 10 miles south of Clarksdale, Mississippi, near the mythic Highway 49. Even as a young boy, the young Hooker had an affinity for music, singing gospel tunes at the church where his father was a part-time preacher. When he was around eight years old, Tony Hollins, a country blues guitarist who cut a few sides (including "Crosscut Saw" in the 1940s), started courting John Lee's sister Alice. Hooker was fascinated by the music he played, which included numbers like "When My First Wife Left Me" and "Crawling King Snake" (which Hooker would himself wax 20 years later), so he dogged the would-be Lothario until he finally gave him a raggedy old acoustic guitar. The elder Hooker objected to the instrument and the "devil's music" that came out of it, thus forcing John Lee to practice out in the woods. It seems Mr. Hooker may have been right in calling it the devil's music, as John Lee eventually turned away from the church and school. Hooker's parents would later separate when he was 14, and he opted to go with his mother.
The choice was fortuitous, as Hooker's mother entered into a relationship with Will Moore (a blues guitar player who performed with Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charlie Patton). Moore encouraged his stepson's musical interests by presenting him with an old mail-order Stella guitar, but more importantly, he passed on his trademark musical style: the boogie. Though Hooker never failed to credit Moore who graciously and unselfishly bestowed this invaluable gift, he always regretted that Moore did not live to see his boogie style become world-renowned.
In 1933, Hooker left the Delta and made his way to Memphis. He stayed with an aunt near Beale Street, but he was fetched back home after just two weeks. Within a month, however, he ran off to Memphis again, moving on to Cincinnati a year later. While there, he took menial jobs to make money while also making his first public appearances singing and playing. Within a few years, he continued his northern migration and landed in Detroit, where he had heard there was greater opportunity to earn a living. Hooker joined the Army in the late 1930s for the sole purpose of attracting girls with his uniform, but was mustered out within six months when he could not produce proof that he was 21. He returned to Detroit, where, ineligible for the draft, he spent the war years working in the automotive factories by day and playing house parties and the rough clubs along Hastings Street by night, including Henry's Swing Club (actually on Madison Street), which he would later immortalize in song.
Around 1947, legendary Texas bluesman T-Bone Walker came through Detroit and Hooker had the privilege to sit in on a gig. Walker was so impressed with Hooker's performance that he gave him his first electric guitar. A year later, a record shop owner named Elmer Barbee made a series of recordings with Hooker, including "Boogie Chillen"
